    What a readiness assessment involves

Before a formal audit, a readiness (gap) assessment shows exactly where you stand — and what it takes to get audit-ready.

    What it is

A readiness assessment (also called a gap assessment) measures where your organization stands today against a target framework — such as ISO 27001, SOC 2, or CMMC — before you go through a formal audit or certification.

    The steps

A typical readiness assessment moves through five stages:

    • Scope — define the systems, locations, and data in scope.
    • Gap analysis — compare your current controls and practices against each requirement of the framework.
    • Evidence review and interviews — verify what is actually in place, not just what is on paper.
    • Findings — a prioritized list of gaps with risk ratings.
    • Remediation roadmap — what to fix, in what order, and how long it takes to become audit-ready.

    What you get

A clear picture of your gaps, a prioritized remediation plan, and a realistic timeline and effort estimate to reach certification or audit.

    Why it's worth doing first

It prevents surprises in the real audit, focuses effort and budget on what actually matters, and gives leadership a defensible plan instead of a guess.
